LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN
TO PROTECT THE POST OFFICE
AND ALL THOSE AFFECTED
BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

STEP 1 - BUY STAMPS

This is easy, and many of us are already doing it. Stamps are forever, and the money that the USPS collects from selling them will help protect them through the COVID-19 pandemic. The USPS expects a loss of $13 billion in revenue this fiscal year due “directly to COVID-19”, and a loss of $22 billion over the next 18 months. As US citizens, we can choose to directly help fund our Postal Service simply through buying stamps.

STEP 2 - SEND LETTERS TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

We can help the post office by sending more mail, and spread love and friendship to people impacted by the pandemic, by sending hand written letters to family, friends, pen pals, and first responders. Use this pandemic as an opportunity to go offline, and rekindle our love of handcrafted, handwritten letters and cards. Find a new pen pal, or send drawings and thank you notes to first responders. Reach out to hospitals near you, and send thank you notes to the doctors, nurses, and janitors that are keeping us all safe. Or contact your local post office, and send letters and drawings to thank your postal workers that are keeping us all connected.

STEP 3 - SEND LETTERS TO PROTECT THE USPS

Send letters to President Trump, Senate Majority Leader McConnell, and Speaker of the House Pelosi, telling them that we want our United States Postal Service to be funded. We must protect this essential service, which delivers millions of prescriptions and other goods every day that people need to stay safe and healthy. Print our letter, sign it, put it in an envelope, and stamp it! If we can collectively send thousands of physical letters to Trump, McConnell, and Pelosi, we can show them that the American people want them to fund our US Postal Service.

STEP 4 – SEND LETTERS ABOUT OTHER ISSUES

Many things have become evident through this pandemic, and it is clear that things need to change. Send letters to your government leaders: President Trump, Senators, Representatives, Governors, and Mayors. United We Stamp will have prewritten letters on many issues that are directly affected by this pandemic, and require positive action.

Some issues are silver linings, like how air pollution has been reduced due to stay at home orders. Air pollution is a direct cause of asthma, lung disease, and heart disease, which are major comorbidities that can lead to death from COVID-19. It is urgent that we tell our government reps that we must continue this trend toward cleaner air.

Others issues aren't new, but have been exacerbated by the pandemic, like food insecurity. Poor nutrition and lack of access to healthy food are old problems, but ones that we must now confront head on. The pandemic has exposed our food supply system, from outbreaks at meat packing plants, to shortages at grocery stores. Heart disease and Diabetes are comorbidities connected to many of the deaths from COVID-19, and a lack of access to healthy food is a direct cause of these diseases. We must convince our government reps to address this serious issue now.

We must continue to fight for the unalienable rights laid out in our Declaration of Independence: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We must also fight for our means to protect those rights: our right to VOTE.

United We Stamp is causing a #voterSTAMPede as a way to send letters to President Trump and other leaders, demanding that we end voter suppression, so that all American's voices can be heard.

Our streets are filled with nonviolent protesters, however not all of us can be on the front lines of this cause. Some of us are not in cities, or have essential jobs, or must stay home to protect ourselves from COVID-19.

United We Stamp is causing a #justiceSTAMPede as a way to march from home. If we can't physically go to Washington DC or to our state capitols, we can do it through our Post Office. Sending our voices to the President or our Governors, demanding justice for George Floyd and equality for all.

Hikers need our US Postal Service more than most, as who else will deliver us new shoes after we hike 500 miles through the desert? Who else will deliver us a bear can to the High Sierra? Who else will deliver us food to a rural mountain town that may not have a grocery store, but definitely has a POST OFFICE!
